Sun Protection Even When The Sun Is Not Shining

Protect your skin from UV rays even when the sun is not shining!
With the recent spell of dull and rainy weather in the UK, some may think that even though it’s summer, the lack of sun means that sun protection for your skin is not required. However, you do not have to see the sun for harmful ultraviolet rays to be present. The UV rays are invisible and present all year round. It is recommended that some form of SPF should therefore be worn on our face all year around.
Many of us are just concerned with sunburn but the ultraviolet rays which can be split into two types, ultraviolet A and B both cause damage. It is the ultraviolet B that causes sunburn, it only makes up for 5% of the UV rays but is extremely powerful. Ultraviolet A (UVA) causes damage to the collagen and elastin in the skin and causes wrinkles and aging. Ultraviolet B (UVB) damages the skin cells which can lead to mutations that can lead to forms of skin cancer.
So, what can you do to protect your skin? One simple way is to keep out of the sun and try and keep in the shade between late morning and late afternoon. When this is not possible then applying a good broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of at least factor 30 will help protect your skin. If you are swimming, waterproof sunscreen is recommended. Its important to note your face is not just your skin, your eyes and mouth also require sun protection, sunglasses and lip balm are a wonderful way to try this. . Just add a layer of a balm such as Jane Iredales’s LipDrink SPF 15 Lip Balm under your lip colour for some added sun protection.
Whilst sun creams have improved and there is a vast range to choose from, it is worth looking at your skincare regime. Many of us after liberally applying sunscreen to our face can be left with blocked pores and a spotty outbreak. To keep your skin in tip top condition Victoria Davies at The Foundation Studio recommends that you double cleanse afterwards to prevent blocked pores and maintain your good skincare practices such as regular exfoliation, facials etc. It is not recommended however to exfoliate if your skin is red after sun exposure. As well as your sunscreen, switching to a tinted moisturiser, face powder or bb cream with a SPF is a great idea alongside the previously mentioned lip balm with SPF.
