Menopause Day October 18th
1st October 2023
World menopause day 2023... a time for reflection.
With World menopause day 2023 on the 18th of October, Is October a time for reflection? We think so! Especially the reflection you see in the mirror! World Menopause Day 2023 is taking place in October and is a great reminder for all of us, that are approaching, experiencing or post menopause, to take stock of how the menopause is affecting our body.
Whilst symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, difficulty sleeping, brittle bones, weight gain etc. are well documented and are the ones most are familiar with. How many of us are aware that the menopause affects our face and changes our skin condition too?
Our skin is not something that we may naturally think about with menopause. However, studies report that during the menopause the loss of collagen is accelerated, with the average woman losing 30% of its collagen during the menopause. Post menopause, collagen continues to be reduced, albeit at a slower level. Without collagen, skin loses firmness which may lead to more wrinkles, sagging jawlines etc. Other menopausal symptoms can be drier skin or sun sensitivity. As with the other areas of the body affected by menopause, there are no absolute rules or remedies. Skin is no different, each woman is different, not every woman will experience the same symptoms and so there is no “one fix all solution”. To deal with menopausal symptoms, there should be an individual tailor made or bespoke approach including the skincare regime, that suits each woman’s skin and symptoms.
Victoria Davies at the Foundation Beauty Studio says “Menopause is an important time to review your skincare routine. Products that have previously worked for you pre menopause may no longer work for you or be as effective as they once were. You may want to review or change your cleanser, moisturizers, sun protection etc. Collagen is key to your skin’s appearance and so you can look at ways of increasing the levels in your skin be it through your skin care regime, food supplements or facial treatments such as the collagen lift”. The foundation Beauty Studio offers bespoke facials, where the skin is first examined to identify what the skin needs, and then a bespoke facial is created to address any issues identified.
