Protect Your Skin In Winter Too !

6th February 2025

Your skin needs protection from the elements and sun all year round

Whilst many of us of wear our sunglasses and diligently apply sunscreen during the summer and on sunny days, it is true to say that many of us are unaware that frosty winter weather can damage our skin too. You can, in certain wintry weather, sustain sun damage as you would in summer. UVB rays are present all year round and can burn your skin at any time. Certain factors such as high altitudes and the reflective qualities of snow and ice can contribute to the effects of the sun, that cause premature aging and sun damage. If you are off skiing, then a hat, sunglasses and a good sunscreen are an essential part of your ski and après ski outfit.

The colder winter weather holds less moisture leading to moisture loss from the skin. Icy winds can damage our skin and the skins protective barrier stripping essential oils from our skin. The winter affects our skin in other ways with the lack of sunlight affecting the sebaceous glands production of oil, this with the damage from the winds can increase the lack of moisture in our skin. This can also apply to our lips which in wintry weather, can become dry and chapped. In the colder months we spend more time indoors with central heating etc. on, this again can affect the moisture levels in our skin and without protection the skin can look dull and flaky. It can also increase irritation of the skin causing flare ups etc.

In the winter to protect our skin it may be an idea to try different skincare products to the summer, a richer more balm like moisturiser may assist in retaining moisture levels. Products like Linda Meredith’s Net 45 with its blend of almond oil, avocado, camelia and geranium extracts can be good to use in cold weather conditions. The other crucial point is for good winter skincare is sun protection, which should be worn all year round. To protect your skin and prevent sun damage it is important that your skincare regime includes SPF to protect your skin from the UV rays.
